About
Play-based Activated Learning
Many schools call themselves play-based but what does that mean? Are the children really learning through play?
Since 1986, The Children’s Workshop Preschool has been developing a curriculum where play is integrated into ALL of the teaching and the imagination rules! We call this activated learning. When the children learn about Mars they build Mars Rovers out of cardboard and live on the planet as scientists: learning about the atmosphere, building green houses, and discovering sources of water. The children create Mars books that include their beautiful artwork as well as their writing and original ideas. When they learn about Octopus or Snow owls they create them as works of art. They become them through dramatic play.
Social and Emotional Skills
And what about developing the social and emotional skills they will need to navigate through life?
It is so important that children learn to work together cooperatively and understand their own feelings as well as others'. In this way they learn to practice compassion. We incorporate this idea into all levels of our teaching. Our children learn about stillness, balance, and focus in our daily practice of yoga. Verbal and listening skills increase as they talk about their dreams and share their experiences in our daily circle. There is singing, dancing, and laughter! Your child will enter kindergarten eager, capable and confident.
